First Responders, Emergency & Medical Professionals

First responders, emergency and medical professionals, aid workers and their family members often times face a unique set of challenges particular to this line of work. It takes a professional familiar with this lifestyle who really "gets it". 

 

Having been a first responder for nearly five years and coming from a family of emergency professionals, I bring not only professional knowledge, but also personal experience to working with emergency and medical professionals. 

 

I am a contracted provider with multiple law-enforcement, fire and rescue agencies and frequently participate in ride alongs with various organizations to gain an enhanced understanding of the unique culture of each. ​

Education

After earning my BS in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point, I obtained my MA from the Hazelden Graduate School of Addiction Studies. Post graduate studies have allowed me to expand my knowledge in areas such as developmental theory, career counseling and trauma. 

 

Ongoing professional education focuses on expanding my skills and knowledge in areas including but not limited to:

  • ​Trauma & Dissociation 

  • Depression & Anxiety

  • Chemical Dependency

  • Emergency Service Workers and Critical Incidents

Approaches used in a therapy session may include, but are not limited to:

  • Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

  • Interpersonal

  • Mindfulness-Based Interventions

  • Prolonged Exposure

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • Brainspotting

Professional Experience

My work experience has allowed for a variety of opportunities which have added to my knowledge in working with all clients. I have been privileged to serve at an internationally-recognized in-patient hospital as well as out-patient programs.  I have experience as a search and rescue volunteer which aids in my work with first responders. 

 

I currently operate a private practice and serve as the Mental Health Professional for multiple public safety agencies and their peer support teams.  

 

I have contributed to various articles pertaining to wilderness and adventure therapy and have presented nationally on a variety of topics including stress, trauma, compassion fatigue and other topics pertaining to first responder wellness.
